DJ Speakers – DJ Speaker Packages and DJ Speaker Stands
When it comes to putting together a good dj system you will need to give some important attention to choosing your dj speakers and this involves making sure that they are up to the job you require of them.
There are several different types of dj speaker systems and they are widely available at online dj stores and even local shops like maplin electronics. You should be able to get lots of information from just looking at the different products available online or going to some of the major dj stores which will be happy to assist you when choosing the best dj speakers for your requirements plus you may also be lucky enough to pick up some great deals on used dj speakers and dj speaker stands.
The different types of dj equipment speakers for dj use include monitor speakers, powered speakers, passive speakers and PA speaker systems.
Some more detail to help you choose your dj speaker system:
1) Monitor Speakers
Monitor speakers are used by DJ’s and performance artists on stage so that they can hear themselves playing above the main speakers and amplification. Main speakers may drown out the sound at a distance and it makes it very difficult for dj’s to mix when they are hearing the beats from a distant speaker which can cause a slight sound delay from leaving the speaker to their ears. This is when a monitor speaker is very useful and essential in larger venues.
2) Powered Speakers
DJ Powered Speakers are the same as normal speakers but they incorporate their own amplification within the unit. This means that a powered speaker does not require any external amplification and can be plugged directly into a DJ mixer. This type of speaker is also good for karaoke dj equipment where lots of bulky units like amplifiers is not essential. The downside of powered speakers (also known as active dj speakers) is that if you decide that you need a more powerful sound then you may have to buy new speakers with amplifiers and ditch the powered ones.
3) Passive Speakers
Passive DJ Speakers (or 2-way speakers) are the most common type of speakers and they contain just the speaker cones and usually a crossover for equalization between a bass and treble unit. They contain no additional amplification and for them to work they will need to be attached to an amplifier that can handle the required sound output and wattage rating of the speaker. You will need to know what type of amplifier is best suited to your passive speaker as attaching a to higher powered amplifier can cause permanent damage to your speakers or even blow the speaker cones themselves.
4) PA System Speakers
PA System Speakers require external amplification and are generally used for personal appearance and band amplification and can be found anywhere from your local pub and karaoke entertainer through to massive stadiums where they link literally hundreds of speakers together to form chains of PA speakers using many 1000’s of watts of power amplification.
You can get complete dj speaker packages which include a pair of 2-way dj speakers, a bass bin unit (single bass driver), an amplifier (suitable power) and dj speaker stands and this is a great option when you are starting out as all the speaker components and amplification is usually matched for optimal performance rather than buying each unit separately which can cost more and also maybe the dj speaker system units will not be as well matched.
It is very good to learn about dj speakers and speaker configurations as they are the main stay of any dj equipment setup. You can start out with a small 300 watt pair of either used dj speakers or cheap dj speakers and trade them in at a later date for something more suitable to your growing venue sizes. In personal experience our dj professional and mobile disco dj’s have a personal preference towards jbl dj speakers as they produce top quality sound and are extremely sturdy.
Remember you can only sound as great as your dj equipment allows so choosing a good dj speaker system is one of the most important parts of your overall system. With this mind it is a good idea to allow as much budget as possible when it comes to buying your speaker system and don’t penny pinch here as you will regret it later and go through maybe 2 or more speaker system upgrades before you realised you should have opted for those better speakers to start out with.
